Postharvest Structural and Physiological Responses of Cut Narcissus Stems

چکیده
Postharvest vase life of cut flowers is largely influenced by water uptake and xylem functionality. This study investigated anatomical and physiological changes in stem tissues of Iranian Narcissus (including N. tazetta and N. papyraceus) during the first three days after harvest. Microscopic analysis revealed significant reductions in stem area, perimeter, and vascular bundle size, attributed to parenchymal cell collapse rather than vascular occlusion. Despite increased bacterial colony counts—particularly in vase solutions from Shahla-Kazerun, Shahla-Khusf, and Shahla-Behbahan genotypes—no xylem blockage was observed. These results indicate that, in the studied Iranian narcissus populations, early postharvest stem tissue collapse, rather than vascular occlusion, plays a key role in reducing stem integrity, as no xylem blockage was observed during the first three days after harvest.
