Drought Resilience in Pistachio: Linking Growth, Redox Homeostasis, and Antioxidant Defense

چکیده
Drought is a major limiting factor for pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) growth and productivity in arid and semi-arid regions. This study evaluated the responses of the saplings of seven Pistacia interspecific hybrids to drought stress and subsequent recovery by assessing growth traits (plant height, stem diameter, and leaf area) and physiological markers (leaf and root redox potential, hydrogen peroxide, and catalase activity). Drought significantly reduced growth and increased oxidative stress in all hybrids, with sensitive genotypes (‘C8-3’, ‘C16-1’) showing the greatest H₂O₂ accumulation (179% and 178% increase in leaves, respectively) and minimal recovery. Tolerant clones (‘C1’, ‘C4-2’) maintained higher growth, efficiently regulated redox status, and induced catalase activity (up to 115% increase in leaves), allowing near-complete recovery after rewatering. These results indicate that coordinated regulation of growth and antioxidant defenses underlies drought tolerance and resilience, providing valuable criteria for selecting pistachio hybrids suitable for water-limited environments.
