چکیده
Iron is a critical micronutrient for cyanobacteria, involved in photosynthetic electron transport, pigment biosynthesis, and overall cellular metabolism. In alkaline cultivation systems such as Zarrouk medium, iron bioavailability is often limited, making nutrient management a key factor in Spirulina platensis production. This study evaluated the effects of a gradient of iron concentrations on growth and physiological responses of S. platensis. Cultures were grown in modified Zarrouk medium containing 0, 1, 5, 10, and 15 mg L⁻¹ FeSO4. The standard Zarrouk iron concentration (10 mg L⁻¹) served as the control, representing iron-sufficient conditions. Growth was assessed via optical density at 750 nm (OD750) and dry biomass, while physiological indices included chlorophyll a, total carotenoids, and phycobiliprotein content. Iron limitation significantly reduced growth and pigment levels, particularly under iron starvation (0 mg L⁻¹). No significant differences were observed between the control (10 mg L⁻¹) and iron-enriched (15 mg L⁻¹) treatments, indicating saturation of iron requirements. These findings highlight the importance of precise iron management and provide insights for optimizing Spirulina cultivation.
