Effect of Melatonin on Essential Oil Yield and Phytochemical Traits in lemon verbena

چکیده
Melatonin is a multifunctional biomolecule with various applications in plants. This study aimed to investigate the influence of foliar spraying application of melatonin at concentrations of 0, 100, and 200 µM on the antioxidant defense system, total phenolic content, ascorbic acid concentration, and essential oil yield in lemon verbena. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design with three replications under controlled growth conditions. The obtained results demonstrated that 100/200 µM melatonin application significantly increased the levels of total phenolic compounds (19%/28%), ascorbic acid (2.5%/2.8%), and total antioxidant capacity (15%/6%) compared with the control plants. Moreover, foliar treatment with melatonin remarkably improved essential oil content (32%) and yield (48%), with the highest values observed at 100 µM concentration. These findings suggest that melatonin plays a critical role in improving the biochemical and physiological traits of lemon verbena, likely through its modulatory effects on antioxidant metabolism. Therefore, melatonin application could be considered an effective and eco-friendly strategy to enhance the quality and productivity of medicinal and aromatic plants.
