چکیده
Chilling stress can severely compromise the physiological integrity and water status of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum). This study investigated whether walnut leaf (WL) and walnut green husk (WGH) extracts could be used as natural biostimulants to mitigate chilling-induced dehydration. Sweet basil plants were subjected to controlled chilling stress (4 ℃) after receiving foliar applications of WL (20, 40, 60 and 80 mg/L) and WGH (30, 50, 70 and 90 mg/L). The experiment evaluated three application frequencies: once, twice, or three times. Key physiological metrics, including relative water content (RWC), water saturation deficit (WSD) and plant growth parameters including plant height (PH), plant fresh (PFW) and dry weight (PDW) were measured. Chilling stress severely disrupted water relations, reducing RWC and increasing WSD in the control group. While single applications were insufficient and occasionally detrimental, a double foliar application emerged as the optimal strategy. Foliar application of walnut extract, can improve the growth of the sweet basil in terms of height, fresh weight and dry weight and show a statistically significant difference between the treatments and the control group at the level of P ≤ 0.05. These findings suggest that walnut extracts applied twice effectively stabilise cell membranes and enhance chilling tolerance.
