چکیده
Understanding intrinsic physiological strategies for water regulation and water-use efficiency is essential for identifying germplasm with stable performance under variable water availability. This study evaluated three complementary physiological indices relative water content stability (RWC Stability), intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE), and stomatal conductance dynamics (Gs Dynamics) in nine canola (Brassica napus L.) genotypes under optimal, non-stress growth conditions. Analysis of variance revealed highly significant genetic differences for all indices (P < 0.001), indicating strong genetic control of baseline water-regulation mechanisms. Genotype G3 exhibited the highest RWC Stability (118.93%) and iWUE (6.02 µmol CO₂ mmol⁻¹ H₂O), coupled with stable stomatal conductance dynamics. Correlation analysis showed a moderate positive relationship between iWUE and Gs Dynamics (r = 0.441) and a weak negative relationship between RWC Stability and iWUE (r = −0.193), highlighting partially independent regulatory pathways. Integration of these indices identified four distinct physiological strategies: (1) conservative-efficient (G3), (2) simple conservative (G2, G8), (3) proactive (G6, G5), and (4) balanced (G4, G7, G1, G9). The conservative-efficient strategy, combining high water-status stability with efficient carbon assimilation, represents a desirable physiological phenotype for breeding programs targeting water-limited and variable environments. These findings demonstrate the value of physiological trait-based screening under non-stress conditions as a predictive framework for rational crop improvement.
