Alleviating Drought Stress in Sugarcane (CP69-1062) through Foliar Potassium Silicate Application

چکیده
Drought stress restricts sugarcane productivity by increasing oxidative damage and reducing sucrose-based juice quality. This study evaluated the effectiveness of foliar-applied potassium silicate in mitigating drought stress in the commercial sugarcane cultivar CP69-1062 under greenhouse conditions. A pot experiment was conducted as a completely randomized design (CRD) with two irrigation levels, 85% field capacity (control) and 30% field capacity (severe drought), and five foliar potassium silicate doses (0, 100, 250, 500, and 750 mg L⁻¹) applied at tillering onset and stem elongation stages. Leaf biochemical traits (MDA, SOD, CAT, and APX) and technological juice characteristics (Brix, Pol, extract purity, and sugar yield expressed on a per-plant basis) were evaluated. Drought stress significantly increased MDA and APX (P < 0.05), while SOD and CAT remained stable. Foliar potassium silicate reduced oxidative damage and improved juice quality, with the 250 mg L⁻¹ dose producing the greatest improvement in extract purity and sugar yield per plant. Higher doses showed limited additional benefits, likely due to foliar osmotic constraints
