چکیده
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are highly reactive molecules produced in plants during normal metabolism and under various abiotic stresses. The objective of this review is to critically examine the plant antioxidant defense system and its role in regulating ROS to maintain cellular homeostasis and enhance stress tolerance. The methodology involves a comprehensive literature survey of recent studies (2018-2025) on enzymatic antioxidants, such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidases, and non-enzymatic molecules, including ascorbate (ASC), glutathione, and phenolic compounds. Results from these studies indicate that the coordinated action of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants effectively mitigates ROS-induced oxidative damage and supports physiological processes under environmental stresses. Furthermore, gaps in current knowledge are identified, highlighting potential research directions for improving plant resilience through targeted antioxidant modulation. This review provides valuable insights for researchers in plant physiology, biochemistry, and agricultural biotechnology.
